Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is now being offered at Greenfield High School. PLTW is the nation's leading provider of rigorous and innovative Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education for middle schools and high schools. The hands-on, project-based program engages students on multiple levels, exposes them to areas of study that they typically do not pursue, and provides them with a foundation and proven path to college and career success in the STEM related fields.
During the 2010-11 school year, Greenfield High School is launching the first of four high school courses under PLTW. Principles of Engineering explores the wide variety of careers in engineering and technology and covers various technology systems and manufacturing processes. Using activities, projects and problems, students learn first hand how engineers and technicians use math, science and technology in an engineering problem-solving process to benefit society. The course also addresses concerns about social and political consequences of technological change.
Three other PLTW courses will be launched in the next three school years. Thus far, there has been a great deal of student interest in PLTW. This year alone, 70 students are enrolled in Principles of Engineering and will earn a science elective credit while the course helps to prepare them for post-secondary educational opportunities.
PLTW will be launched at Greenfield Middle School beginning with the 2012-13 school year with Gateway to Technology courses. These courses are five independent units taught over the course of nine weeks in conjunction with a rigorous academic curriculum.
