Art Studio
Art Studio is an after school art enrichment program for 6th, 7th, & 8th grade students. The students apply for this program in September of each year. 24 students are selected for the group. The students meet on Mondays after school for one hour to explore different art techniques and media. Students have the opportunity to try new assignments and enter competitions. All Art Studio students participate in the annual Art Fair by working at the Art Booths. Students also earn funds for art projects by having themselves "adopted" by a staff member each year. During the year the students will make special art gifts for the staff member that adopted them. In spring the group takes a trip to Artist and Display (art store) and visits a location to do sketch work. We celebrate the end of the year with our ice cream sculpture party!
Forensics is an after school program that is open to all students. It is a public speaking competition in 17 different categories ranging from poetry to persuasive oratory, from acting to news reporting. The students learn to communicate with confidence, poise, and effective delivery.
The students compete in meets and are scored by judges. Then they receive ribbons and trophies for their hard work. The activity begins in November and runs through March.
Geography Bee
The GMS geography Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society to promote geographic literacy.
In October, all GMS students participate in round I of the Geography Bee in their social studies classes. The top 10-12 from each house proceed to round 2, which usually occurs during National Geography Awareness Week in November. Round 2 consists of 75 geography questions which need to be answered in a 45 minute time limit. The top 24-25 proceed to round 3. Round 3 is the Oral Geography Bee and takes place in November. Prizes are awarded at all levels.
We also conduct Geography Awareness Activities during the Geography Awareness Week, which are based on the national theme.
Jazz Ensemble
Students in jazz will learn various styles including swing, rock, Latin, plus others. Jazz Ensemble meets outside of regular school hours and is comprised of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, electric keyboards, electric bass, electric guitar, and percussion. Jazz usually meets before school one day a week.
National Honor Society

The group participated in many community service projects and activities throughout the school year. Students must apply for membership, providing evidence that they meet the criteria stated above.
